Alvernia College

Alvernia College was initially founded in 1926 by the Bernadine Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis when they established a Teacher’s Seminarium for the education of Sisters. In 1958 the school, located in Reading, Pennsylvania, expanded into a four-year liberal arts college. Alvernia College attained university status in 2008 and is now known as Alvernia University. The school began with 31 students and currently enrolls nearly 3,000 students annually.

Alvernia University has satellite campuses in Philadelphia and Pottsville.  It is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Alvernia’s motto is “To Learn, To Love, To Serve”. The five core values that the university basis its education upon were adapted from the Franciscan tradition and include service, humility, peacemaking, contemplation and collegiality.  Students are encouraged to model these five core values.

The College of Arts and Sciences offers a BA in Psychology with the potential for a dual major in similar fields such as Social Work, Criminal Justice, English or Addiction Studies. Students pursuing a Psychology degree spend two semesters in a practicum where they learn from, as well as contribute to, work done in community agencies and private fields. Being involved in the community allows students to pursue possible careers in the process.

Another key feature of an Alvernia education is students work closely with one or more faculty members during their educational pursuit. Faculty members mentor students while they work on completing their senior theses as well as assist students with research projects. There are currently over 50 student groups including student government, honor societies, intramural and intercollegiate sports.

Downtown Reading is located about three miles from campus and offers several attractions including GoogleWorks Center for the Arts, the Reading Public Museum, outlet shopping, minor league sports, and concerts. There are also trails for hiking and biking and movie theaters.
